This release comes with several new features and improvements:

Import and export transaction notes

Adding custom notes to your transactions in the BitBoxApp is a great way to keep track of your coins and makes finding “that one transaction” a lot easier. Previously, when using the BitBoxApp for the first time on a new device or after a full reinstallation of the BitBoxApp, these transaction notes including custom account names had to be manually recreated.

With this release, users can export their transaction notes and account names as a simple text file, which can then be re-imported in the BitBoxApp on another host device with just a few clicks. This can save a lot of time in case of long transaction histories with detailed notes attached to them.

Improved fee rate recommendations

In the past, the default fee rate estimation of the BitBoxApp, which was based on Bitcoin Core, could sometimes be inaccurate or simply too high. To give users more peace of mind when creating transactions in the future, this new release switches the source for fee rate recommendations to that of popular Bitcoin explorer mempool.space.

The four new priority levels reaching from no priority to low, medium and high now provide more granular and efficient recommendations, saving transaction fees ideally without compromising on waiting time. Of course, the user’s privacy should not draw the short straw here, which is why we will query fee rate recommendations from mempool.space ourselves in regular intervals. This way, nothing changes for the user in terms of privacy. Serving as a proxy between the customer and fee rate recommendation source avoids leaking user information such as IP addresses to an external service.

The new fee rate source is active by default once updated to the new version of the BitBoxApp.

Show device name before unlocking

When plugged in, the BitBox02 will now display its own device name on the display, allowing users to verify they are about to unlock the device they intend to. This is helpful for households with multiple BitBox02 devices in use or users that switch between different backups on a regular basis, avoiding confusion at a glance.

Support for payment requests

A new functionality added to the BitBox02’s firmware is the support for payment requests, which is based on SLIP-24 pioneered by Trezor and paves the way for an exciting new feature. To send bitcoin securely, the recipient needs to communicate an address to the sender without it getting manipulated, for example by malware on the host device.

By storing a public key of the recipient directly in the firmware, messages signed by this recipient can be verified independently by the device. Because of this, users can be confident a deposit address of an exchange is correct and unaltered, for example when trying to sell their coins.

This will enable a workflow in the future, where the user simply confirms the intention of sending coins to a specific service, instead of displaying a deposit address the user actually can’t verify without trusting their host device. We are currently working on onboarding services to this new protocol.

Miscellaneous improvements

This version also comes with a few more improvements and bug fixes:

  • Installing or updating the BitBoxApp on macOS now uses DMG files, a common and less error-prone practice which most users will already be familiar with.
  • The CSV export of transaction histories is now also available on Android.
  • Reused addresses will now be grouped together with a warning label in coin control.
  • A small red dot in the BitBoxApp will now indicate when a new firmware update is ready to be installed on the BitBox02.
  • When in contact with customer support, users might be asked for the BitBoxApp’s log file, which can now be exported with a click of a button through advanced settings.
  • Smaller bug fixes and UX improvements.
