Capanna Cristallina

This time we named our BitBox update after a mountain hut that was picked by some fellow Swiss bitcoiners, the Baden Bitcoin Club (BBC). Capanna Cristallina is a gorgeous modern basecamp for everyone: families, hikers, and skiers alike. It’s located in the Italian part of Switzerland, where stacking ice cream scoops is a staple of summer life. A great fit for our latest release, which makes stacking more sats with Pocket or Bittr directly to the BitBox02 a breeze.

Introducing the Address Ownership Proof Protocol

Withdrawing your coins from an exchange or providing a receive address to a dollar-cost averaging service can be a pain, especially if they need to make sure that you withdraw in your own wallet. This is how the hugely popular KYC-light stacking services like Bittr or Pocket work: you sign a text message with your BitBox02, so they know you are withdrawing into your own wallet, and then they can skip any additional KYC steps.

If you’re using a desktop computer, this is now possible with a simple click in your browser. Using your Android phone, simply scan the QR code. The BitBoxApp opens, guides you through the three-click process, and sends the receive address directly back to the service.

The open Address Ownership Proof Protocol (AOPP) makes this possible. Together with 21 Analytics, we helped specify this protocol, and it is now adopted by more and more wallets and financial service providers. We think this is a big deal as centralized crypto services become more regulated, chipping away the core values of cryptocurrencies held on custodians bit by bit. AOPP provides an easy route towards self-custody without sacrificing privacy or decentralization. While AOPP already works in BlueWallet and Sparrow Wallet, the BitBox is the first hardware wallet to support it. Another cutting-edge update for you! :)

Here’s a quick video demonstrating how a world without copy/paste can look like! 😎

Improvements to funds management

Your BitBox allows you to be your own bank. Since the last BitBox update, you’re now able to manage your funds in multiple accounts of the same coin. For example, it’s easy to manage a savings account for your kids completely independent of your other funds, with a different set of addresses. With this update, you now also can disable accounts again.

Find the improved account management functionality under “Settings / Manage accounts”.

Settings / Manage accounts

To understand how accounts work, it’s important to know that the wallet does not actually create these. All addresses are derived using a predefined derivation, with the main secret (your master seed) as the starting point. So adding and removing accounts is simply “showing” and “hiding” them: they were there all along! So it’s not possible to delete an account and lose access to it. It’s simply hidden and can be shown again at any time - even with other wallets.

For Bitcoin, every account has its own derivation path and extended public key. This (technical) information is now also shown in the “Account information”.

Suppose you need to keep track of your funds for tax or portfolio management purposes outside the BitBoxApp. In that case, you can import them into CoinTracking with its advanced reporting and analytical capabilities. See our new in-app guide entry on how this works!

Various improvements

Of course, there are always minor improvements. We pay close attention to user feedback (in our BitBox Telegram group or our open-source code repositories on GitHub, for example) to see what causes issues or could be improved.

Additional fee options for Ethererum

During times of high usage of Ethereum, or if you’re in a rush, you can now choose from different fee recommendations, or set your own transaction fees. To enable this feature, go to “Settings” and activate “Enable custom fees”. The next time you’re sending ETH or any ERC20 token, set the fee to the level you want:

Prevent screen from turning off on Android

Do you use the BitBoxApp on Android? It’s awesome and contains all features of the desktop app. One thing we noticed, though, is that it’s very annoying that the phone screen can turn off when you’re not using the app directly, for example, because you’re signing a transaction on the BitBox02. Your general system settings defined the screen timeout. Now, the app disables this setting, and your phone screen will not turn off while the BitBoxApp is open.

A warm welcome on a brand-new BitBox02

The BitBox02 is built by security engineers, which is a good thing. But sometimes it shows, for example when you plug in the BitBox02 for the first time and you’re greeted by the word “BOOTLOADER” on the screen. You convinced us that there’s no harm in a friendly “hello”, so a more emphatic bootloader with a nice welcome message will hit our production line soon.

Toggle the display of the binary firmware hash

You should not need to trust us. We go to great lengths to create a fully transparent product that can be audited by anyone interested. That requires that all software is open source and built reproducibly (everybody gets the exact same binary machine-code firmware when compiling the source code). To make sure you’re running the right firmware, you can tell the BitBox02 to show its hash (a checksum) when you connect the device. Up until now, you could only enable or disable this setting during updates. Now you toggle it any time; simply go to “Manage device” / “Manage startup settings”. In the “Advanced settings”, you can then activate this feature. Click on “Take me back” to restart the BitBox02.

How can I stay up-to-date?
