This release comes with several improvements and bug fixes:

Improved transaction overview

This release revamps the transaction history in the BitBoxApp with a more modern look that improves legibility by giving individual transactions more breathing space and clearer graphic distinctions between incoming, outgoing and self transfers.

Instead of using current exchange rates, the overview now also shows the historic fiat value of the transaction, at the time it was sent or received. This makes it easier to remember the context of older transactions at first glance. Of course, the current fiat value is still shown in the transaction details.

Native Apple Silicon support

The Sambuco update is the first BitBoxApp release to natively support the ARM architecture on Mac. This has been a long-requested feature, which we evaluated carefully because it meant dropping support for older versions below macOS 10.15.

Mac users with Apple Silicon (M-series chip) can now run the new version of the BitBoxApp without having to rely on Apple’s emulation software “Rosetta”, which means the app will launch notably faster, feel more snappy in general and consume less battery life.

For users on older Intel based Macs, nothing changes. The new release is universal, which means macOS will automatically pick the correct version based on your device’s chip architecture, so you don’t have to worry about picking the right one.

Change output labelling

When spending UTXOs that are larger than the desired amount, the BitBoxApp, like most wallets, automatically creates a “change” payment back to your wallet. For our privacy minded users, the coin control menu in the BitBoxApp will now label UTXOs that were received on change addresses as such, providing more context about a given output’s history at a glance.

Information like this can be helpful, since spending a change output reveals information about the previous payment to the recipient, which you might not want. Together with the existing feature to warn about address reuse, this can help users to be more mindful about their privacy when creating transactions.

In addition, some brokers and exchanges require a test transaction for address verification ("satoshi test"), which means sending a small amount of bitcoin from an address to the service. This is a cumbersome requirement, because using a change address would result in future withdrawals not being shown as intended in any wallet’s transaction history. Now, users can simply avoid change UTXOs when creating these transactions.

BTC Direct’s private trading desk

Ever feel like locking in a large bitcoin trade conveniently over the phone, just like the professional bankers in the movies do, and having it sent straight to your cold storage? We partnered up with BTC Direct to add their over-the-counter (OTC) service to the BitBoxApp.

With BTC Direct’s private trading desk, you get personal assistance for large OTC trades for Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum stablecoins, and more. You'll have a dedicated account manager guiding you through every step, ensuring a secure, straightforward experience with fixed rates and minimal slippage. The minimum order amount is 50,000€ and the fixed fees from 0,5-1% already include personal guidance.

More information on BTC Direct can be found in the app, with more news about the partnership coming next week on our blog.

Miscellaneous improvements

This release also comes with a few more improvements and bug fixes:

  • The option “no priority” has been removed from fee recommendations to avoid setting fees too low on accident. More advanced users can use custom fees instead.
  • The BitBoxApp log file can now be exported on Android as well.
  • Visual improvements to the account loading animation.
  • Removed support for the deprecated Ethereum Goerli testnet.
  • Fixed a bug where the Moonpay widget was not loading correctly.
  • Fixed a bug of the QR code scanner when rotating the device on Android.
  • Smaller bug fixes.

Lago del Sambuco

Each new BitBox release is now named after a beautiful lake located in Switzerland. This time, we visit Lago del Sambuco in the canton of Ticino, a small reservoir in the Lavizzara valley held together by its 130m tall dam. Maybe the included power plant has some hidden Bitcoin miners in use? ⚡️
